When Watermelon Smash Sessions Don’t Go as Planned (And Why That’s Okay)

There’s a funny expectation when parents book a milestone session.

The baby will smile.

The cake will be smashed.

The watermelon will be loved.

Everyone will laugh.

Perfect photos will magically happen.

And then reality shows up. 😂

This sweet little lady had other plans for her watermelon smash session. The moment she was placed in the setup, she made it very clear that she was not impressed with the situation. The watermelons? Suspicious. The bucket? Questionable. The photographer with the camera? Absolutely not.

But here’s the thing…

Those moments are often my favorites.

Because years from now, her parents won’t just remember what she looked like at this age. They’ll remember her personality. They’ll remember the dramatic expressions, the pouty face, the side-eye, and the determination to let everyone know exactly how she felt.

That’s what photography is really about.

It’s not about creating perfect children or perfect moments. It’s about preserving who they were in that season of life.

Sometimes that’s a giant smile.

Sometimes it’s a watermelon-themed protest.

And honestly? Both deserve a place on the wall.

One of the things I love most about photographing families and little ones in Omaha is watching these tiny personalities shine through. Every child is different, and every session tells its own story. My goal isn’t to force moments—it’s to capture them as they happen.

Looking back at these images, I can already imagine her family laughing about this session years from now.

And that’s exactly why we take the photos.
