Vintage Is Back: Why Unconventional Weddings Are Having a Moment
Vintage Is Back: Why Unconventional Weddings Are Having a Moment
Perfectly posed. Perfectly coordinated. Perfectly beige.
Wedding photography had its moment with all of that.
But lately? Couples are starting to want something a little different.
And I am HERE. FOR. IT.
We’re seeing vintage-inspired weddings, funky venues, bold colors, direct flash, film-inspired editing, unconventional dresses, intimate celebrations and couples who are much more interested in creating a wedding that actually feels like them than following a checklist of what a wedding is “supposed” to look like.
And honestly? It makes for some seriously incredible photographs.
Wedding Photos That Feel Like Something
There’s something about vintage-inspired wedding photography that feels less staged and more like a memory.
The grain. The movement. The warm colors. The dramatic light. The slightly imperfect moments that somehow end up being the photographs you love the most.
Instead of every image looking polished within an inch of its life, there’s room for personality.
A blurry dance-floor photo because everyone was losing their minds.
A direct-flash portrait that looks like it came straight out of a 1970s party.
A quiet moment between two people that feels more like a still from an old movie than a traditional wedding portrait.
That’s the good stuff.
Omaha Has Some Seriously Cool Places to Get Weird
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings in Omaha is finding locations that aren't necessarily the first places you'd think of when you hear the words “wedding photos.”
These photographs at Platypus are a perfect example.
The funky décor, vintage plates, deep colors and eclectic atmosphere created an entirely different feel than a traditional wedding venue—and that was exactly the point.
Rather than fighting the unusual environment, we leaned into it.
Warm light. Dramatic shadows. Veils. Silhouettes. Funky compositions.
The result feels romantic, nostalgic and just a little strange.
Basically… perfect.
The Return of the Anti-Wedding Wedding
More couples are realizing that you don't have to throw out everything traditional—you just don't have to do something simply because everyone else does it.
Want a courthouse ceremony and cocktails afterward? Do it.
Want to wear something completely unexpected? Please do.
Want wedding portraits in a funky Omaha bar instead of standing in a field at sunset?
YES.
Want some gorgeous traditional portraits for Grandma and some weird editorial photographs that look like they belong in a magazine?
We can absolutely do both.
The best weddings aren't necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. They're the ones where you can look around and immediately know whose wedding you're at.
And Your Wedding Photos Don't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's Either
As an Omaha wedding photographer, I want you to have the beautiful photographs—the family portraits, the first kiss, the ceremony, the details and all those moments you'll want to remember 30 years from now.
But I also want to make the photographs that make you stop scrolling.
The weird ones.
The dramatic ones.
The blurry ones.
The perfectly imperfect ones.
The photograph where you look at it and think:
“Holy crap. That's US.”
Because trends will come and go. Vintage will disappear and inevitably come back around again. Editing styles will change.
But photographs that actually make you feel something?
Those never go out of style.
